Going the Extra Mile

June 16, 2011

How far would you go for a client? Would you jump off a 6 foot drop on a mountain bike? We would.

When the guys from Transition Bikes told us they were doing their East Coast tour, we had no choice but to pack up our gear and hit the road. After a couple of Red Bulls and 4 solid hours or driving, it was somehow 2 AM and we were in Connecticut. The next morning, we joined up with Kyle, Kevin, Cam and the crew at Cutting Edge Bike Shop for a quick tour of their shop and a full day of riding.

Shuttle runs to the top of the hill were handled by Josh Gee from Masterlink Rides and his off-road, blacked-out school bus. The hand built trails were mind blowing and filled with unique stunts, drops, and enough gap jumps to put our skills to the test. The Transition crew hit everything in style, inspiring us to step up and push our own limits on a bike.

Exhausted and dirty, we wrapped up the day by grabbing a late dinner with Transition. It was a great opportunity for us to catch up, talk business, and reflect on the sweet day of riding that was still fresh in our minds. We finished things up around 11pm and charged back to Philadelphia.

At humid we don’t take the easy way out. Our relationships with our clients are extremely important and if it means driving all night and then stepping out of our comfort zone, we’re all for it. To truly know each client in their own unique way you have to live and breath what they do. This helps us not only in understanding their business, products, or services, but really getting to know the people driving it all. We are fortunate enough to work with talented and passionate people, and take pride in going the extra mile to provide them with the best creative services that we have to offer.

We are stoked to be working with Kevin and Kyle from Transition again, and can’t wait to see what they throw at us next. To check out their sweet line up of bikes, go to their website: www.transitionbikes.com

DirtFest 2011

May 26, 2011

This past weekend, a few of us from the studio hit up DirtFest 2011 with the PMBA crew. This annual mountain bike festival is hosted by Dirt Rag Magazine and features group rides, sponsor tents, bike demos, camping with waterfront views, great beer, and live music. However, with over 32 miles of flowing single track, the Allegrippis Trails take center stage. These hand-sculpted trails are sustainably built with one thing in mind: speed. They are buttery smooth with momentum-feeding rollers, twisting turns, and tons of elevation change. Make sure that you bring your fastest, lightest bike and lots of water because you will not want to stop. The whole weekend was a blast and left us wanting more.

Visit the Allegrippis Trails website for trail maps, directions, and current trail conditions.

Opening Day at Launch Bike Park

May 12, 2011

It’s no secret that we have been putting in some quality time with the PMBA crew lately, moving dirt and building trails at Launch Bike Park in preparation for opening day. Monsoon-like weather pushed the opening date back, but you couldn’t have asked for better riding conditions when they fired up the lifts on that following Saturday – 70 degrees & sunny! The park already has tons of quality trails featuring everything from natural rock drops and wooden features to rocky downhill with fast, flowy berms. It’s only a half hour from Philly and is shaping up to be an awesome freeride destination. Check out their Facebook page for more information, and when you get up there look for us at the PMBA tent.

Ray’s is Rad

February 25, 2011

So what do you do when you’re deep into another wintry February and you haven’t been able to ride your bike in so long that you almost forgot what color it is? You hop in the car and drive 7 hours to Ohio, of course. Why Ohio? Because it’s home to Ray’s MTB, the first indoor mountain bike park in the world! Last weekend was Women’s Weekend at Ray’s, so Kyle, Josh, and Linda rolled out to Cleveland with the PMBA crew to rub elbows with some pro women. We jumped on a couple of bikes and sampled over 100,000 square feet of warehouse filled with skinnies, pump tracks, jump lines, teeters and a xc loop 20 feet in the air. To call this place unbelievable is an understatement. It’s a MTB destination! We packed over 15 hours of riding into the weekend exposing ourselves to more Red Bull, skinny jeans, and mustaches than any one person should have to endure. We left on Sunday feeling exhausted and a little banged up, but were stoked with the news that Ray is planning to build a third park on the East Coast in the near future.

Check out more photos from our trip on our facebook page.

Sharing the Sky

November 3, 2009

Hello all. This is Amy – the newest ‘member’ of humid – writing to you today with another experience. In trying to think of something thrilling to add to the mix of mountain biking, kayaking, and having babies, I remembered what I did this summer! I went parasailing for the first time. Now, I have usually classified parasailing in the ‘extreme activities’ category up there with sky diving and bridge jumping. I have never really felt the need to pursue such activities, though maybe if presented with the opportunity, I wouldn’t turn it down. So when this summer, my Uncle decided to take his family parasailing during our family vacation to Ocean City, MD, the rest of us were faced with the decision to join in the fun. My sister and I decided we were up to some fun and new adventures, so we went along for the experience.

Let me tell you – it was not anything like I imagined it! I am not a huge fan of roller coasters and ‘loosing your stomach’ and this is what I was imagining most of this sailing experience would do to me – not at all! We took off right from the back of the boat (which worked out way better than starting on land and face planting into the water like everyone on America’s Funniest Home Videos does!) and just lazily floated up above the water. I think we were on a 900′ rope or so and were up in the air for about 10 minutes or so. At the end, they bring you down (the part I thought was going to feel like falling out of the sky) and dip your feet in the water, and then pull you into the boat. It was definitely a lot of fun, so relaxing to be floating up in the sky, and it’s a great view. I recommend the experience, especially riding with someone else – it’s always fun to share experiences!

Fear Cannot Be Hidden

August 24, 2009

So, this experience actually occurred in the spring, but we’ve been pretty busy, and have not had the chance to write about it until now. I (James) am writing this experience because typically these stories come from the parents, but I think it is interesting to have someone else’s experience (in this case, as the coworker/uncle). So here it is… from my perspective…

It started out when Kyle and I had the task of running the office for a week while Josh was off playing the “my wife is having a baby at any moment” card. Despite our scattered selves, we did a good job, and kept everything afloat. Then we got the call saying “it’s happening tonight!”, but the question was….when? I arrived at the hospital later that evening with my mother-in-law (Liz and my wife were already there) and set up camp in the waiting room. A few hours went by of playing the waiting game. Kyle showed up a little while later, and after playing iPhone games to pass the time, Josh finally walked out of the delivery area looking all composed and proud as a new dad (when really he was scared out of his mind… check out his face in the image below!)

So after hours upon hours upon hours of waiting (Ok, it wasn’t as bad as I’m making it sound) we finally got to see this new little addition to the Baker (and humid) family. His name is Elliott Kristoff Baker and after just five and half short months, we already have him programming in wordpress and making films about dinosaurs!

This experience was definitely one for the books, as most births in the family are. Josh probably had the best experience out of this one, but we were right there to enjoy it with him (waiting…playing games….eating donuts….it was rough) Come on! Like Josh had a hard time! Amy is the one who did most of the work. Congratulations again to Amy and Josh for providing such a great piece of entertainment, and our new studio mascot.

Kayak Tour OBX

July 13, 2009

On a recent trip to the Outer Banks, NC (OBX) I had the opportunity to take my (Josh) family kayaking – some of them for the first time – at the Pine Island Audubon Sanctuary.

The weather was perfect, 84 degrees and sunny with a slight breeze. After a quick lesson on paddling, we set out to the launch site with Jackson (pictured), our guide for this voyage. Let me pause here to acknowledge that Jackson was an amazing guide and provided some great insight into some of the local wildlife, history, and folk lure of the OBX. He also does a pretty sick Black Beard impersonation. We were on the water for about 3 hours and to my surprise no one ended up in the water – although there were several attempts to change that from a few people whose names I will not mention). This is a great way to get a little closer to some of the local wildlife and spend some time getting a little exercise while doing so.

We booked our kayaking through the North Beach Outfitters located in Duck. They offer a variety of eco-tours that explore several different areas on the OBX ranging from salt water marshes to fresh water rivers. For more information on tours and pricing, check out their website – www.coastalkayak.org – or contact the store at 252-261-6262 or 252- 441-3393 if you want to talk to someone in person.

Tough Love

July 9, 2009

“Tough Love”, by Chad

You ever rest on your laurels and think “it will never happen to me”? You just cruise through life thinking and believing you are invincible, you know that feeling? It is the feeling you get when you land that first 360 snowboarding, or you drop that rock drop mountain biking – you know the feeling I am talking about – then you start pushing your limits and landing bigger tricks and dropping bigger drops, all the while remaining invincible.

THEN, a nemesis sticks you in the back to claim your spot…..well on 10/26/08, my nemesis, a root named Charlie on a trail called Cedar Dust on Galbraith Mountain in Bellingham, WA – claimed my spot. Charlie stole my ego and shut me down, after allowing my wheels of ego to roll over him countless times over a 12 year span of time. Charlie buttered himself up extra slick for my rear wheel to slip just enough to kick my left foot out in front of my pedal and connect on another rock and…well the pics tell the rest of the story

Bad Day at the Bowl

June 1, 2009

So we decided to do some jumping at the bowl in Wissahickon this weekend, it started off great but maybe we stayed too long.

We were jumping and feeling good for the first hour or two then we decided to hit the doubles we finally conquered a month ago. To make a short story even shorter Josh walked away with some cuts and a sore shoulder and I (James Cory) walked away with a screwed up ankle and embarrassment.

We’ll be back though, hopefully with more luck!
